ROTTING MEAT SEIZED ON RIVIERA
PARIS August 17, 2005 (Guardian) - [French] inspectors have seized 2.6 tonnes of unsafe and rotting food in restaurants and snack bars from Menton to Cannes since the beginning of July.
"Every year, the problems are the same," said Lionel Parle of the local branch of Alimentation Vacances survey, a joint operation mounted nationally every summer by France's consumer protection agency, health and safety board and government veterinary service. "No one seems to learn."The most common offences were dirty kitchens and the refreezing of defrosted food. Inspectors in the Alpes-Maritimes département have so far uncovered four times as much inedible food as last year, the main offenders being snack bars, fast-food outlets and seasonal restaurants.
TRIE-SUR-BAISE, France August 15, 2005 (AP) - France's handful of "fetes folles," or crazy festivals, attract a regular cult following and throngs of incredulous holidaymakers. One fete features an acclaimed lying contest; another boasts a distance spitting competition.
Then there is the annual Pig Festival and French Pig-Squealing Championships (Pourcailhade, Fête du Cochon) in Trie-sur-Baise. The 2005 champion pig squealers are a father-and-son team, Yohann and Olivier Roussel.
The judges, headed by a former champion, had been impressed by their vocal imitations of pigs in all four of the required categories, reflecting key milestones of porcine existence: from noisy farmyard birth to death under the knife, via suckling and -- inevitably -- mating.
Death under the knife via mating? Little wonder that the birthrate of the French kaffir is so low.
Thoughtless French Drivers Spoil Safety Campaign
PARIS August 9, 2005 (AFP) - Police in France are to step up the number of speed traps and motorist checks after an increase in the number of road deaths this year that has marred a national traffic safety campaign, Transport Minister Dominque Perben* said Tuesday. ... Perben blamed motorists for relaxing a vigilance that had slowly been drummed into them with the introduction 18 months ago of radars and stepped-up police checks. ... In a statement, he called on younger drivers "to respect the lives of others"...
