GENDARMES HUNT DOWN THE RIVIERA BOAT THIEVES

ST. TROPEZ July 14, 2006 (Telegraph) - Boat theft on the French Riviera has become big business. Highly organised mafias from eastern Europe are becoming ever more daring as they steal luxury yachts to order.

"Le boat jacking", as Côte d'Azur residents call it, was almost unheard of a decade ago. Now it is a growing threat to yacht owners and holidaymakers, and marine gendarmes have redoubled their efforts to take on the new pirates.

In five years about 1,000 vessels have been stolen from marinas, mainly along the coast between Nice and Cannes. Many were small vessels but the haul included 32 luxury yachts and cabin cruisers, worth on average almost £3 million.

Territorial waters end 12 miles out to sea, after which pursuing the criminals becomes an international affair. It takes a cabin-cruiser travelling at 20 knots only about 45 minutes to clear French waters. Once out of reach, the thieves often head for Malta, or Tunisia, where they register under a bogus offshore company, repaint their booty and rename it. Next stop is the Black Sea, where they sell the stolen vessels to a growing clientele of nouveaux riches, mainly from Russia and Ukraine.

"It is a kind of money-laundering," Col Grimaldi [commander of the marine gendarmerie of the Mediterranean] said. The yachts are also used for trafficking drugs and weapons.

Well, we all have our little problems, Damian. Yours always seem to leave more dead people behind though, have you noticed?

Huh? Another apples-to-oranges response from M. Zmx.

Little problems? Well, for her size France seems to have more than her fair share of criminal ignominy. There is M. Ilan Halimi, he is definitely dead following torture and mutilation. As is Sebastian Sellam. And Chantal Piekolek, she too is dead, stabbed 27 times in the neck. Chantal Klimaszewski was beheaded and her work mate Lucette Gariod had her throat slit.

On France's recent crime blotter is a lesbian murder gang, a husband-wife serial murder team, and a celebrity rock murderer.

And France still remains a kill zone for the unwary aristocracy.

Not all French crimes end in cruel deaths. Some simply celebrate cruelty. And this and this and this.

These of course are the crimes of freebooters. The French state has managed murder and wantonness and mortal criminal neglect on a much larger scale.

No, M. Zmx can rest easy, for once we will concede America has nothing over France.

Bonjour,

Damian,

You are more than welcome to provide us with credible US vs. Western Europe/Asia violent crime / jail incarceration statistics.

M.Zmx is all for us doing his homework. If he has a point then we invite him to do his own spade work, something other than his one-off Quaero headline search. Of course, how nice if he had something to say actually pertinent to the post -- but we dream.

Did anyone notice that low moaning? Oh, M. AB/AY has fallen into the thread. And he can't get up. Pity.
