THREE-WEEK HEATWAVE CLAIMS 64 LIVES IN FRANCE

PARIS July 27, 2006 (AFP) - The French health-monitoring authority InVS [Institut de Veille Sanitaire] updated the death toll in France to 64, from a previous estimate of 40...

This year, there has been no repetition of the massive loss of life caused by the last major heatwave in 2003 when in France alone 15,000 people died.

The silver lining to a massive government failure is that as a point of comparison it is hard to top.

The director of the French InVS health monitoring body, Gilles Brucker, warned that the number of deaths could rise in France, even though wet weather lowered temperatures across most of France on Thursday.

Separately on Thursday, French weather office Meteo-France announced that July had been the hottest month on record, on average three to four degrees Celsius above the norm.

So who do you blame for California's heat wave victims, God?

M. Zmx, unlike some cranky theodiceans, we see God's agency in much without thinking him to blame.

If you are posting about California heat deaths because you do not want to comment on French heat deaths, we understand.

Of course had you read the article to which you link much would be apparent. Over the past two weeks California had sustained temperatures in the 100s, including records in Fresno, with six consecutive 110-plus-degree days, and Sacramento, with 11 consecutive triple-digit days.

Another factor, a million Californians lost power, largely because of heat-related equipment failures.

So if you ask us to look at France and California side by side, here is what we see:

1. Heat severity F: yes C: yes
2. Highest recorded temperature F:104° C:119° (110°-115° in the central valley of California July 23-24)
3. Striking doctors F:yes C:No
4. Understaffed emergency rooms F:yes C:no
5. Living down a recent catastrophic failure of its healthcare network F:yes C:No

Bonjour,

Good luck to your country in Irak , dear Milton Friedman !!
