Today begins the ninth month of the Islamic calendar Ramadan (رمضان) marked by ṣawm (صوم, fasting), good works, and an effort by Muslims to be nice.* It is a month set aside for the business of religion.
It is also a special time for French bigots.
VANDALS ATTACK TWO MOSQUES IN FRANCE
QUIMPER, France September 24, 2006 (IHT/AP) - Vandals attacked two mosques in France early Sunday, setting fire to one in the western city of Quimper and scrawling insults on the walls of another in Carcassonne, in the south, officials said.
Firefighters called to the scene at 4:20 a.m. extinguished the blaze at the Penhars Mosque in Quimper, in the Brittany region of western France, said Philippe Paolantoni, deputy prefect of the region. Swastikas were scrawled on the outside walls. The prosecutor's office opened an investigation.
... In the Medieval city of Carcassonne, in southern France, racist insults were scrawled on walls of the mosque there, according to the prefecture of the Aude region. An investigation was opened there, too.
Perhaps it is because it is Ramadan, but we find it mystifying how the desecration of a mosque -- a material attack on Islam -- is taken in stride by the Muslim community, whereas the publication of innocuous cartoons -- a challenge to Islamite repression -- sets Muslims off torching the world.
* Islamites don't stand on ceremony. For them it's just another month of butchery for Allah.
