Royal Announcement

And then there were two.

[Here, amid party militants and the French, I answer the question with simplicity, also with graveness, conscious of the weight of my words and the importance of the act: Yes, I accept this mission to conquer for France and the trials that go with it -- and that I want to safeguard my family -- and thus present myself to the vote of the Socialists and then to the judgment of the French to win by their esteem, their confidence.]

There you go, all official-like. Ségolène Royal, PS deputy for Deux-Sèvres (2ème), enters the presidential bikini competition.

ROYAL RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT OF FRANCE

VITROLLES September 29, 2006 (WaPo) - Segolene Royal, who tops polls as the Socialist choice to run for French president next spring, formally announced her candidacy Friday.

... Royal has been accused by rivals as being a light weight. She has served as environment and family minister among other posts but has never served in what are considered the weighty ministries like finance, interior or foreign affairs.

During the Ségo summer the press loved Ségo. Now, a candidate for high office, the press gets busy unloving Ségo.

PRESS TURNS PERSONAL AS SEGOLENE SAYS SHE WANTS TO BE PRESIDENT

PARIS October 1, 2006 (Telegraph) - [Ségo's] long-anticipated formal announcement on Friday evening that she is seeking the Socialist Party's nomination in next year's presidential election has coincided with an unprecedented wave of reporting by French newspapers and magazines, which have been delving into her past and that of her relations.

... When their mother, Hélène finally left [husband Jacques Royal], it was Ségolène who persuaded her to sue for financial support.

She refused to see her father up to his death but was persuaded to attend his funeral. "My sister makes no concessions," said [brother] Antoine. "She is someone who keeps her word, who has lived through injustice." Her uncle Pierre Royal, however, accused her of twisting the family history to her advantage. "I reproach her for publicly damaging the reputation of her father by portraying him as a dictator," he told Le Parisien.

The newspaper also revealed that in 1985 another brother, Gérard Royal, had placed the bomb on the hull of the Rainbow Warrior, which was blown up on the orders of François Mitterrand, then the French president.

The Aussies call this "chopping the high cotton". It's easier than, say, detailed reporting on Ségo's plans to reform state pensions.
