Phillipe de Villiers, the presidential long-shot of Mouvement pour la France (MPF), was giving a speech in Toulouse. At the very moment he pronounced himself unafraid of Islamists ("Je ne crains pas les islamistes") a "bomb" -- to great dramatic effect -- was detonated outside.

TOULOUSE 7 octobre 2006 (AFP) - Un engin incendiaire a été lancé sans faire de victime, samedi soir, devant l'entrée d'une salle où se tenait une réunion publique du président du Mouvement pour la France (MPF) Philippe de Villiers, a-t-on appris de sources concordantes. C'est, selon M. de Villiers, au moment où il prononçait "Je ne crains pas les islamistes" que l'engin a explosé avec "une forte détonation". Le président du MPF venait d'évoquer le cas de Robert Redeker, le professeur de philosophie menacé de mort après la publication d'une virulente tribune sur l'islam. "Il y a eu une grande frayeur dans la salle", a indiqué le président du Conseil général de Vendée précisant toutefois que celle-ci n'a pas été évacuée.

Police are investigating but calling this a minor incident.

For good measure M. de Villiers later said he would be pitiless with Islamists while being careful not to omit the usual sop to well-behaved Muslims ("l'immense majorité des musulmans qui pratiquent dans la paix").
