PARIS 11 novembre 2006 (AFP) - La municipalité de Philadelphie (Etats-Unis) a déposé plainte pour "apologie de crime" contre les villes de Paris et Saint-Denis (Seine-Saint-Denis) pour avoir honoré le détenu noir américain Mumia Abu-Jamal, condamné à mort pour le meurtre d'un policier en 1982, a indiqué à l'AFP Me Gilbert Collard.

"Les dépôts de plainte par courriers recommandés pour +apologie de crime+ ont été expédiés jeudi aux parquets de Paris et de Bobigny", a précisé l'avocat marseillais, confirmant des informations du quotidien France Soir.

Dans ce dossier, Me Collard représente, avec Me Martin Bozmarov, du barreau de New York, les intérêts de la ville de Philadelphie (Pennsylvanie) où Mumia Abu-Jamal a été condamné pour le meurtre d'un policier, crime qu'il a toujours nié.

"Le but n'est pas d'aller contre un quelconque combat contre la peine de mort, mais la municipalité de Philadelphie trouve anormal le principe de l'utilisation de la citoyenneté d'honneur (à Paris, ndlr) ou de l'attribution d'une rue (à Saint-Denis, ndlr) à un condamné, qu'il soit condamné à mort ou à la réclusion à perpétuité", a précisé Me Collard à l'AFP, rappelant qu'il était lui-même opposé à la peine capitale.

In this case, attorney Collard represents, with New York attorney Martin Bozmarov, the interests of the city of Philadelphia where Mumia Abu-Jamal was convicted for the murder of a police officer, a crime which he has always denied.

"The aim is not to oppose those against the death penalty, but the city of Philadelphia finds abnormal the principle of using honorary citizenship (in Paris, ed.) or the naming of a street (in Saint-Denis, ed.) for someone found guilty, whether sentenced to death or life imprisonment", attorney Collard told AFP, recalling that he himself opposed capital punishment.]

We can't imagine Philadelphia will get very far with its complaint. The French are free to shame themselves however they choose in France. But given the situation in France, we don't see honoring a cop-killer as very popular or very smart.
