The French are the most opportuning and most unfriendly people of Europe. Today's exhibit -- Deauville, a French tourist town, that seeks to both attract and bar tourists. British tourists specifically. It is a town conflicted between its own economic interests and that French snob thing.
CHIC RESORT TRIES TO REPEL BUDGET-FLIGHT BRITS
PARIS November 15, 2006 (Scotsman) - residents of one of France's most chic seaside resorts are up in arms over plans by the Irish budget airline Ryanair to offer low-cost flights from the UK, amid fears the town's glamorous image will be damaged by British "yobs".... As the jewel in the crown of the Normandy Riviera, Deauville has boasted its own airport for more than half a century, but since it opened in 1953, it has been used only by charter or private aircraft, many of them flying in wealthy racehorse owners.
Now the residents are worried that Ryanair's plan to offer one-way flights from London's Stansted Airport from 1 March for as little as £19.99 will attract mass tourism.
... [Christiane Celice] has launched a lawsuit against the airline's partners in France, the regional government and Deauville town hall, which is funding the advertising for the new route.
"We think the tourism interests in Deauville and the vast majority of people will be delighted," Peter Sherrard, the [Ryanair's] head of communications, said. "All this rubbish about the 'great unwashed' turning up is absolute nonsense. This small group of objectors might feel differently when the prices of their houses double."
Yes, they might. Or Deauville may decide to cut its economic throat and become a welfare dependency with a fancy beach.
