Earlier we posted on the government's extraordinary New Year's measures to tamp down the racaille. And it looked like heavily policed France thwarted the thugs, holding them to a mere 313 torchings, a falloff from last year's 425 torchings.

Except they weren't. And it wasn't.

11 janvier 2006 (NouvelObs) - Le nombre de voitures brûlées lors de la nuit de la Saint Sylvestre "est 70%" plus élevé que le chiffre fourni par le ministère de l'Intérieur le 1er janvier au matin. Ce sont les chiffres établis jeudi 11 janvier par Europe 1 après son enquête conduite auprès des préfectures.

Selon la radio, 683 voitures ont été incendiées cette nuit-là. Le ministère avait publié de son côté un bilan, arrêté à 6h00 le 1er janvier, se montant à 396 voitures brûlées, dont 83 par propagation.

Ce bilan "n'a jamais été réactualisé; or on sait que tout au long de la journée des gens découvrent que leur voiture a brûlé : exemple en Seine-Saint-Denis, à 6h00 il y en avait 47, au final il y a en 70", a affirmé la radio.

[The number of cars torched on New Year's Eve "is 70%" higher than the figure provided by the ministry for the Interior the following morning. These are the figures established Thursday January 11 by Europe 1 after its investigation compared the prefectures.

According to the radio, 683 cars were set ablaze that night. The ministry for its part published its assessment as of 6:00A on January 1, amounting to 396 burned cars, including 83 by propagation [i.e., by proximity to an intentionally torched car, giving the reported 313 torchings of the ministry].

This assessment "was never updated; however it is known that throughout the day some people discovered their cars burned: for example, in Seine-Saint-Denis, at 6:00A there were 47, with the final count at 70", the radio reported.
