La France a en effet cessé d'être une grande puissance mondiale depuis l'effondrement de 1940, malgré tous les efforts du général de Gaulle pour sauver les apparences. Elle a perdu son empire, comme c'était d'ailleurs inexorable, sous la IVe République et au début de la Ve . Elle disposait alors par chance d'un dernier grand projet historique, l'aventure européenne, cette tentative sans précédent d'union pacifique et démocratique entre plusieurs vieilles nations qui se déchiraient férocement depuis un millénaire. ... C'est cette dernière tentative pour exister et peser à l'échelle du globe, pour se servir de l'Europe comme d'un levier d'Archimède pour mettre en oeuvre une ambition française spécifique, une vision du monde médiatisée par l'Europe, qui vient d'être détruite en quelques années. L'UE que l'on va célébrer ce week-end ressemble beaucoup plus à l'Europe britannique qu'à l'Europe française, à l'Europe transatlantique qu'à l'Europe continentale, et ce sont nos propres erreurs qui nous rétrogradent ainsi en deuxième division.
